Collect.

Students gather their own examples with the iPad and start a new model with its name and author.

02

Train.

They choose the settings and watch accuracy and loss improve, iteration by iteration.

Teaching materials

A complete unit.
Ready to teach.

Six exercises, one for each model type. Each one fits in a 50 minute class, and each one ends with an app your students can build in Swift Playgrounds.

Exercise 1 · Image

What’s in my pencil case?

Tell a pencil, an eraser and scissors apart from photos the class takes.

Swift Playgrounds iconTheir app. The camera recognises each object live, with its icon and confidence.

Exercise 2 · Sound

What’s that sound in class?

Recognise claps, finger snaps and knocks recorded in class.

Swift Playgrounds iconTheir app. It listens to the class and counts every clap, snap and knock it hears.

Exercise 3 · Tabular Data

Can we guess your height?

Predict someone’s height from the size of their hand, foot and arm span.

Swift Playgrounds iconTheir app. A form that builds itself from the model, and a figure that grows to the predicted height.

Exercise 4 · Text

Which subject is this sentence from?

Guess which school subject a sentence comes from.

Swift Playgrounds iconTheir app. As you type, it ranks the subjects from most to least likely.

Exercise 5 · Hand Pose

Rock, paper, scissors

Recognise rock, paper or scissors from a photo of a hand.

Swift Playgrounds iconTheir app. Play against the iPad: a countdown, a random pick and a scoreboard.

Exercise 6 · Hand Action

Gestures that speak

Recognise hand gestures from short videos.

Swift Playgrounds iconTheir app. The front camera recognises the gesture and the iPad says it out loud.

Swift Playgrounds

From a model
to their own app.

Swift Playgrounds is where students write real Swift code. Put the two apps together and a class project ends with an app they built themselves, around a model they trained themselves.

  1. 01Export.Students export their model from MagicaLCore EDU as a .mlmodel file.
  2. 02Start an app. They open a new App project in Swift Playgrounds, on the same iPad.
  3. 03Add the model. They drop in the .mlmodel and write the screens in SwiftUI, with a live preview as they type.
  4. 04Show it.They run the app on the iPad and share it with the class.
Free on every iPad.Swift Playgrounds is a free app from Apple, for iPad and Mac.
Starts from zero. Its Learn to Code lessons teach the basics with puzzles before students build their own app.
Grows with them. The same project can open later in Xcode on a Mac.

Swift Student Challenge

A real goal for
a real project.

Every year Apple invites students to create an app playground and submit it to the Swift Student Challenge. A model they trained themselves can be the heart of it.

Once a year.Submissions usually open early in the year. In 2026 they closed on February 28.
One student, one app. Each entry is an app playground made individually, in Swift Playgrounds or Xcode.
350 winners in 2026.From 37 countries and regions. 50 Distinguished Winners were invited to Apple Park.

Where MagicaLCore EDU fits.

  1. 01Pick a problem.Something they care about: sorting recycling, recognising birds at school, reading a sign in sign language.
  2. 02Collect their own data.Their own photos, sounds or measurements, so everything in the project is theirs.
  3. 03Train and test.In MagicaLCore EDU, on the iPad. The model works offline, as the Challenge asks.
  4. 04Build and explain. They build the app playground around the model and explain in their own words how they made it and which tools they used.

MagicaLCore is not part of the Swift Student Challenge and is not affiliated with Apple. Who can enter, the minimum age and the rules change every year and by country or region, so read the official terms before starting.
